On Wednesday, January 29, 2020, Facebook reached a 550 USD million settlement from users over alleged misuse of their personal data from Facebook’s tag suggestion facial recognition, a feature that allowed Facebook users to recognize other people in uploaded photographs. The lawsuit originated in Illinois in 2015 from user complaints about their Tag Suggestions feature breaking Illinois state law, specifically the Biometric Information Privacy Act. The settlement still has to receive preliminary approval from an Illinois district court.
